Sump Pumps
One of the most devastating disasters a homeowner can face is basement flooding or excessive dampness. Typically, our basements are used as storage for valuable items. In other cases, basements have been finished and are used as home offices, gyms, or recreation lounges. So any water flooding the basement can cause significant damage to both the property and one’s belongings. Fortunately, there is a simple solution to this problem: a sumppump. Sump pumps are a type of water pump that is placed in an excavated hole (called a sump pit) in the basement. As groundwater levels rise after snowmelt or rainfall, the hole fills. However, as the water rises, the sump pump activates, pumping the excess groundwater up through piping and safely away from the house.
Kinds of Sump Pumps
There are several different types of sump pumps all of which were designed to pump water out before it reaches the level of your basement floor. There are two types of sump pumps: pedestal and submersible. A pedestal pump has the motor mounted above the pit, where it is more easily serviced but also more conspicuous. The submersible pump is entirely mounted inside the pit, and is sealed to prevent electrical short circuits:
- submersible: the pump is submerged in water
- pedestal: the pump motor is placed above the water level
- water-powered: relies on water pressure to power the pump rather than electricity.
Liberty Sump Pumps
Liberty Pumps is a leading U.S. manufacturer of pumping products for ground water and wastewater removal in residential and commercial applications. Handling fluid temperatures of up to 200° F, Liberty’s HT40-series submersible pump is designed for hot water applications such as boiler blow-down pits, condensate pits and high temperature water transfer. Other features include all cast iron housings, epoxy powder coat finish and a high temperature float.
Selecting the Right Sump Pump
Installing a sump pump can save your home from hundreds or even thousands of dollars of damage. The only thing required is some regular maintenance and cleaning of the pump. Make sure that all the dirt, gravel or sand brought in by the water is removed at least every four or five years. It might be a good idea to do this once a year if you live in a very sandy or muddy area where your sump pump runs a lot. Dirt can prevent the check valve from opening which again can burn out the pump. Choosing the right pump depends on the application:
- Sump Pumps: A sump pump is used in applications where excess rainwater or groundwater needs to be pumped away from a particular area. A sump pump sits inside a basin (also known as a sump pit) that collects this excess water.
- Drain Pumps: A drain pump is used to pump the water from a sink, most commonly in laundry tray applications.
- Sewage Pumps: A sewage pump is used to pump wastewater (with solids) that is typically generated from bathroom use in residential or commercial applications.
- Effluent Pumps: An effluent pump is typically used in septic tank applications. Effluent is the gray wastewater that remains after the solids settle out.
Have a problem that you can’t seem to solve? Let our extensive experience with sump pumps help you to solve problems others cannot.

Grease Interceptors
Grease, fats, oils, waxes and soaps can have an extremely detrimental impact on your waste drainage system. If you have anything to do with the preparation and cooking of food, you are going to have to invest in grease interceptors sooner or later. Restaurants, or anyone in the food preparation industry either installs grease interceptors or they take the risk of plugging the sewer lines causing back-up problems and ultimately creating a health hazard. Installing an efficient waste removal system for your restaurant may seem time consuming and costly, but the benefits far outweigh the costs and potential harm to your place of business. Irving\’s Plumbing Supplies not only specialize in the best grease interceptors on the market, we supply lint, hair and solid interceptors from such reputable brand names as Contour, Zurn and Watts.
What are grease interceptors?
Grease interceptors are plumbing fixtures that traps grease, lint or hair to prevent them from entering and clogging up the sewer system. In more technical language, it\’s a vault with a minimum capacity of between 500 and 750 gallons that is usually located on the exterior of the building. The vault includes a minimum of two compartments, and flow between each compartment is through a 90° fitting designed for grease retention. The capacity of the interceptor gives the wastewater time to cool, allowing any remaining grease not collected by the traps time to congeal and rise to the surface where it accumulates until the interceptor is cleaned.
Where can you use grease interceptors?
Grease interceptors are used in kitchens, restaurants, meat processors, food packagers, cafeterias in schools, churches, prisons, hospitals and institutions, and all types of food processing areas where waste water contains grease, fats and oil. They are installed on waste lines which can receive grease from dischargers including, but not limited to, wash sinks, food preparation sinks, floor drains, automatic dishwashers or similar plumbing fixtures in all restaurants, kitchens, cafeterias, clubs, delicatessens, fish markets or any place where grease may be introduced into the drainage system. Interceptors are usually required for high volume restaurants (full menu establishments operating 16 hrs/day and/or serving 500 meals per day) and large commercial establishments such as hotels, hospitals, factories, or school kitchens. Grease traps are required for small volume (fast food or take-out restaurants with limited menus, minimum dishwashing, and/or minimal seating capacity) and medium volume (full menu establishments operating 8-16 hrs/day and/or serving 100-400 meals/day) establishments. Medium volume establishments may be required to install an interceptor depending upon the size of the establishment.
Lint and hair interceptors are installed on lavatories or sinks in dormitories, motels and beauty salons. Intercepts hair and sediment which is commonly encountered in these areas. Serves also as a safeguard against losing rings and other valuable jewelry due to accidental dropping into lavatory drain. Unit is easily cleaned by removing cleanout plug on bottom of body and dropping perforated basket.

Floor Drains for the Plumbing Industry
We never think of floor drains until its too late, but drains are more important than we think. If we were only dealing with water, this wouldn\’t be as much of an issue. There are a many different kinds of drains to choose from each with its own unique design and features. At Irving\’s Plumbing we tend to think of drains in terms of a drainage system which includes everything from the trap to the pipe that carries waste water or sewage through a drainage network into the municipal sewer or a private septic system. Our drainage products range from the general all purpose floor drains to shower, trench and area roof drains. Our suppliers include Contour, Zurn, Mifab, Ancon, and OS&B.;
